Free Redwork and Embroidery Patterns

At almost 96 years old, my mother-in-law, Dorothy, still did 'fancy work'. As a someone who taught herself to sew, to quilt, to embroider, to applique, crochet, and knit, she had always made homemade gifts and loved her very last Christmas holiday at almost 97, just as she had for all of her life.

By the end, her hands lack the agility and skill she once had and, one finger has a snapped tendon, and she hadrecuperating from two mini-strokes or TIAs. But up until age 96, she was still embroidering 'tea towels', hot pad/potholders, pillowslip/pillowcases and much, much more. And she gave us one last homemade Christmas before everything in her life changed forever.

So, for Dorothy, and for that time in her life and all time in ours, I am sharing a small list of free redwork...or embroidery patterns

shown above:
one little 'hotpad' that Dorothy made, and I received years ago. Isn't she just sweet?

Free Patterns for Cancer Awareness: Quilts, Ribbons, Quilts, Caps, Pillows, Pouches, and other Projects

http://www.with-heart-and-hands.com/2013/10/free-patterns-for-cancer-awareness.html

In honor of October being 'Breast Cancer Awareness' and "Think Pink" month, I have updated my free quilt, and quilt ribbons patterns with the addition of links to free patterns for chemotherapy caps, pillows, and breast and arm comfort pouches patterns.

My collage at the top shows a quilt that I made for my mom using a photo transfer process that I blog at on my primary blog, and one of the always popular pink ribbon fleece blankets that I also made for her. (see Freezer Paper Photo Transfer for that technique)

I blog about that time on my personal blog With Heart and Hands, where I also offer a multitude of free quilt patterns, and all of the photo tutorials from my own quilting and sewing that led to this blog as a place to store my links and blog posts in their own right. Feel free to become a follower on that blog as I share my own personal journey with my readers.

Think Pink and make something special for someone you love!

October is national breast cancer awareness month and around the globe, women everywhere are celebrating their lives and their survival from this devastating disease. We all know someone who has battled the challenges of cancer, but the devastating effects of breast cancer on a woman and the incredible journey of survival is a testimony to the courage and strength that is carried within.

Hard Rock(Cafe) International announced the launch of "Pinktober” – a month-long initiative to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research through a series of live music events started out as ‘Rocktober’ in Europe in 2005 and grew into a global campaign, brings some of the world’s best live music to small and intimate surroundings. The series of events support local breast cancer charities across the world, and proceeds from each event throughout the month goes to the chosen charities.

It's good to remember that any quilt or quilt block pattern can be transformed into a breast cancer awareness or comfort quilt just by the selection of color...pinks, roses, the peachy ballet pinks, and so on. But these blocks, quilts and patterns have been specifically designed for that purpose, so their energy is one of joy and love and intent for a cure for this disease. I also am including some really fun small projects that make wonderful gifts for those battling any illness.

String Pieced Prayer Pocket Pillow designed by Michele Bilyeu
Heartstrings and Prayers for any time they are needed. A little pocket in the back for a note of support and love.

Make Breast Cancer Comfort Pillows for anyone who needs a little love.
These are also wonderful for those recuperating from chest surgery of any kind, as one does after Cardiac Surgery etc.  See, my pieced pillows or make your own from solid fabric or fleece using my link above.

My Prayer Flags: The simplest of prayer flags, made with raw edges of fabric and strings to flutter in the winds of time. Inkjet printing on my home computer. Prayer flags are meant to be unfinished and imperfect..just like our own lives. And they are meant to be light so they can flutter and float as the winds carry our prayers to all corners of this world and beyond.

Cancer Awareness Ribbon Colors for Other Diseases:

During Breast Cancer Awareness month, we see pink ribbons everywhere, and most of us know that this color represents breast cancer awareness.

But you might not be as familiar with the other ribbon colors that are used to promote awareness for the other cancers.

It's just as important to remember all of those we love, who face challenges from other forms of cancer, and to create not only increased awareness for those diseases...but to create comfort quilts or pillows for them, as well.

Making a Wrist Pincushion "With Heart and Hands"

While previously watching another pincushion challenge going around blogland, I was motivated by the dilapidated condition of my own favorite wrist pincushion, to make a new one...and this time take photos of the process!

I especially love this creation, which I designed several years ago, because it also works as a wrist protector/support band for my over-used wrist and its issues ;) It can be made with either one very wide piece of elastic inserted inside (like my original version) or with channels that hold several thinner rows of elastic (like I had...pardon the pun...on hand) to use here.

Or click here, if you're on metered Internet or just prefer a free printable pattern. There are so many of them, but do remember that it took a very long time and the passing of its inventor to come into the free share ware world of free quilting and project tutorials.

So, many quilters take other's patterns and pass them off as their own on the Interent that it's always important to give credit where credit is due and almost nothing is original anymore! Someone has created it before you ever did!

Free Sewing Accessories: Patterns, Tutorials, Ideas and Links!

With Heart and Hands: Free Sewing Accessories Patterns: Updated 2013 My sewing room includes many accessories that I have designed and created, myself. I love general sewing as much as I love quilting. So, whether I am sewing with my bigger Viking Sapphire 870 Quilt... or my much tinier ...Singer Featherweight...every one in our family gets new 'clothes', accessories, and fun craft and quilting supplies! (here's some one else's free pattern that is a different take on mine, above. I never saw hers' ahead of time, and am hoping she didn't see mine, as I don't see a link back for me ;-) But,  I don't mind sharing what I do, and still linking up to other people who've done what I did a little differently!

Singer Featherweight: Sewing Accessories (small mat and a snippets bag) Tutorial

I've made my own sewing machine pocket mats, magnetic wrist pincushions and wrist protectors, pincushions, pattern weights, snippets threadcatchers, roll-up scissors holders and many different sized tote bags for quilting supplies.

But I must confess, I do so love making Sewing Accessories of all kinds!
